Visiting artist lecture: John Jude Palencar
All are invited to hear from one of the illustration world’s standouts at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, as Columbus College of Art & Design alum John Jude Palencar (Illustration, 1979) presents his latest works and discusses his experiences illustrating fantasy and speculative fiction. Palencar’s lecture in CCAD’s Canzani Screening Room will be followed by another illustration learning opportunity—a costume model drawing session led by renowned illustrator C.F. Payne at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in room 210 of CCAD’s Kinney Hall. Learn more about Payne and the drawing session here.
About John Jude Palencar
John Jude Palencar (Illustration, 1979) is an American illustrator and fine artist, renowned for his captivating works in the realms of fantasy, science fiction, and horror.
His ethereal style and conceptualization have garnered global recognition. For more than 45 years he has created book covers and received honors for his contributions to the field of illustration, including Gold and Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators; Gold and Silver Book awards and the Grand Master Award from Spectrum; and six Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Palencar’s paintings have appeared on hundreds of book covers in over 30 countries for such renowned authors as H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula LeGuin, Marion Zimmer Bradley, P.D. James, Charles deLint, Octavia Butler, David Brin, R. L. Stine, George R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien and Stephen King, to name a few. His cover paintings for the Inheritance Cycle, by Christopher Paolini, have appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List.
Palencar also has created illustrations for Time, Smithsonian, and National Geographic magazines; National Geographic Television, Lucasfilm Games (formerly LucasArts), Paramount Pictures; Vivendi Universal; and many others. He was named the first winner of the Butler Institute of American Art’s top midyear prize: a solo exhibition, which was on view in the institute’s Davis Gallery June 23–Aug. 11, 2024.
