Phantom Histories

On view Thursday, March 13, 2025–Saturday, April 5, 2025

Shadow Cabinet examines the interplay of power, violence, and the fragility of reality in 2025 through the lens of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). CCAD Professor of Fine Arts Danielle Julian Norton and The Ohio State University Department of Art emeritus professor and Academy Professor Mary Jo Bole draw from the film’s unsettling expressionism to create an immersive world of drawing, sculpture, and video, where perception is distorted and control is questioned.

At the center of the exhibition is the hunting blind—an object of concealment and predatory intent—reimagined as a psychological trap. Echoing Caligari’s fragmented sets, the blind and surrounding works blur the boundaries between sanity and madness, reality and illusion. Shadow Cabinet invites viewers to step into an unstable landscape where unseen forces manipulate and shape what we believe to be true.
