Artist Statement
Sarah Quanci explores Queerness, self-identity, and girlhood paired with hyper-Christian imagery and an overly feminine palette to create humorous and blasphemous mixed media work. The subject matter encompasses religious imagery, femininity, rural life, humorous irony, and storytelling through quotes and lyrics. Her art pokes at religion and her upbringing within the church, while also serving as a way for herself and the viewer to process personal identity. The objects within her art convey personal childhood circumstances, obsessions, life after religion, and growing up in Appalachia and the rural Midwest. Quanci uses easily manipulated materials within fiber, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
