Fine Arts 2025 Thesis Exhibition

Artist Bio
CJ Albrycht is an Ohio born and Columbus based ceramic artist. They are currently attending the Columbus College of Art & Design in pursuit of a BFA in the fine arts major. In their practice, they use their subconscious thoughts to create patterned figures on ceramic slabs and contextualize them as artifacts within archaeological dig sites. They sculpt these dig sites using a variety of materials, including sand and plaster, in order to bring the discovery of these wildly marked ceramic slabs to the gallery space. Their work is whimsical and presents a mysterious narrative crafted out of their deepest memories.

Artist Statement
This body of work is an archaeology of the subconscious, viewed through the simulacrum of the dig site. The figures present on the ceramic slabs throughout the work are drawn through automatic drawing, which calls upon the subconscious to make marks without conscious input. These slabs, then placed within dig sites, are analyzed as narrative steeped artifacts of an ancient civilization. The dig sites themselves are presented as cut out plots of land in order to transplant the nature of discovery into the gallery space. The sites are composed of plaster, sand, foam, and coffee grounds, alongside some found rocks.
