High School Students: Try Art College on for Size!
Try art college on for size this summer at an exciting three-week, pre-college program at Columbus College of Art & Design.
When Is It?
College PreView will be July 11 - 31, 2010.
What Is College PreView?
College PreView immerses high school students from across the country in studio experiences designed to engage creative minds. This intensive, three-week program introduces like-minded individuals to college life while learning and practicing art skills, effective work habits, and earning college credit.
Solid instruction in drawing, design principles, color theory and hand skills compliment portfolio development and guidance through the college admission process. Elective courses allow the student to explore in depth a chosen area of art or design.
Students live in the residence hall, attend lectures, create art, participate in workshops, work on homework, meet professional artists, exhibit their work, visit local points of interest, blow off steam, and broaden their peer base.
All Students Will Take the Following Courses:
Foundations of Art
The foundation of any successful education or career in art and design begins with the principles of design, color, and strong technical skills. An introductory history of art and design portion serves to enhance the Foundations course with background material in art and design analysis. The foundation classes are designed to give the College PreView student a head start on college level courses and instill a strong base on which to build a creative vision.
Portfolio Preparation
A well-planned and executed portfolio of a student’s best work improves the likelihood of admission and scholarships to art and design colleges. Students will learn a strategy for producing a top-notch portfolio. CCAD admissions representatives will review work, make recommendations, and outline the application procedures for art college scholarships.
Figure Drawing
An integral part of an arts education is drawing; more specifically, drawing from the nude model. Students who can include examples of figure drawing in their portfolios have a greater chance of gaining admission to a college of art and design and of winning scholarships.
Students Will Choose One Elective Class From the Following:
Drawing
Create studies of still-life landscapes, interiors, and objects from nature. Explore simple perspective, accurate proportion, and tonal values using pencil, charcoal, and other drawing media.
Animation
Both a traditional approach to animation through pencil and paper and a more contemporary approach using 3D animation software will be explored. Each student will investigate and incorporate several fundamental concepts in animation into their own original works using their preferred medium.
Fashion Fundamentals
Explore color, garment construction, fibers and fabric, dyeing and merchandising. Learn to illustrate your ideas and construct garments. Examine the nature of inspiration and evolving trends in the fashion industry.
Advertising and Graphic Design
Engage in problem-solving and critical thinking to develop, render, and present a promotional campaign including logo, poster, ad, direct mail, and packaging design.
Painting
Basic to advanced painting techniques including color mixing, washes, brushstrokes, and proper paint handling will be addressed. Students will spend extended time on paintings, incorporating good composition, color theory, and a strong underlying drawing.
Photography
Learn technical fundamentals of photographic equipment, processes, finishing, and mounting. Explore aesthetic principles of technique, light, and composition. You will need to bring your own camera.
Illustration
An introduction to illustration based on design, stylization, and humor, using both traditional drawing and the computer Corel Painter as a tool. Students will explore the basics of creating an illustration from initial thumbnail sketches to final art. Students will work to develop a personal style with a contemporary illustration market in mind. Emphasis on refining drawing and visualizing skills based on concept rather than strict observations of reality.
Evenings & Weekends
In the evenings and weekends, students will participate in a variety of scheduled events, extra studio time, visiting artists, and leisure activities.

Who May Attend
High school students who have completed their sophomore or junior year are welcome. Recent high school students who have graduated in 2010 may also attend the program. There are no application requirements for College PreView. Registrations are accepted on a first-come basis.
Dates
July 11 - 31, 2010. Move-in day is July 11, followed by a mandatory orientation. If you cannot arrange a flight or travel time to coincide with our mandatory orientation, please plan to arrive the day before. Housing will be available for those students who must arrive on Saturday.
Cost
$2,250
- $250 non-refundable deposit due May 14, 2010
- $2,000 tuition and supplies due June 18, 2010
Choosing the Elective Course
Please indicate a first and second choice for your elective course. Every effort will be made to accommodate first choices.
Housing and Meals
College PreView students will live in our recently renovated Schottenstein Residence Hall. Each furnished suite includes: two, two-person bedrooms, living room, bathroom with shower, air conditioning, telephone service, and free high-speed internet. The building includes: copy machines, cable TV, vending machines, and laundry facilities.
Safety and Security
Security and residence hall advisors are available at all times. Students are expected to abide by all housing regulations and the CCAD student code of conduct. Specific rules and regulations will be included in your information packet.
College PreView Faculty
All courses are taught by CCAD’s renowned faculty. Visiting art and design professionals will facilitate special sessions and workshops.
Grades and Credit
Students who attend all classes and successfully complete all assignments will earn three college credits. Students must earn a C or better to receive credit.
Supplies and Equipment
All equipment and supplies are furnished by CCAD with the exception of cameras for the photography elective. Students enrolled in this course should bring their own cameras. Students are asked to bring their portfolio and sketchbooks to enhance the review process.
Leisure Time
Planned activities, walking tours, and off-campus trips are planned by our Resident Life director with a team of summer conference assistants. There is also time to just hang out and make friends.
Arriving on Campus
Columbus is served by Port Columbus International Airport. Airport pick-up and drop-off will be provided by CCAD’s security staff. Driving directions will be included in the information packet sent to registered students. Students who drive themselves to campus will be required to obtain a temporary overnight parking pass and park in designated lots.
Exhibition & Visual Arts Information Day
The College PreView program will conclude with an exhibition of student work on July 31. Coinciding with the exhibition and pick-up day there is a full day of informational activities run by the CCAD admissions department. All College PreView students and their parents are encouraged to attend.
